Go to a bike shop and look at/test ride bikes. Ask question of the shop staff. Most are very willing to help you get started. NEVER buy a wally world bike, not well built or put together and have no resale value.
You'll spend a little more at a shop but you get a better bike and advice. Trek, Giant, etc make good lower end bikes that will not bust the budget. Visit several shops and test ride several bikes. Get a helmet and bike shorts, bike shorts make the riding experience much better by providing some cushion and support. After you buy a bike, go to the river trail and ride some. Get used to your bike before you try the off-road thing. This sport is addicting so beware you will have fun. Not all the riders you see will smile and wave at you (roadies) but many mtn bikers will. Don't know of any classes or schools to attend. Riding is the best school. Enjoy the sport. |
