There is a rumor that the county may decrease the number of trails in the future if the local cyclists don't start taking more interest in the trail system. In other words, dont' just be a user, be more active in trail maintenance and such. I know when I was attending meetings for HSBA, the attendance was the same 5 or less at every meeting. I agree, only a handfull of us are at the workdays and it is usually the same few each time. Too much weedeating and trimming to go around and then we also have projects such as the bike-wash and bridge work. We have more weedeaters and tools available than we do people to use them. Sometimes we have almost as many out of town people to show up and work as we do locals. We have had guys come in from Bentonville, Sheridan, Little Rock, and they were glad to be there. We need to schedule more PayDirt workdays. On a brighter note, there are several riders that go out on their own and periodically do work when their schedule permits. Also, I found out from Ed Hawkins that a few years ago HSBA adopted a section of the Ouachita Trail to maintain. Have we ever had a workday on it? Little Blakely Trails? Crystal Springs? LOViT? We are blessed with all these trails but doing very little to maintain them. Regarding the meetings, those are kind of hard to make when they are typically at 5:30 on a weeknight/schoolnight. Who gets off work at 5:00 anymore? Might try a Saturday afternoon/evening meeting after a Saturday workday.

I would have to agree with WheelBilly, There is no way I can make the early meetings and I would sure like to see whats going on with the club.
Wheelbilly also informed me today someone has been out cutting all the trees along the sides of the Blue trail to make it more of a straight shot  . I hate to hear this because the twist and turns are what gives a trail character . To bad I guess, this is where we as MTBers are missing out on critical input by not staying in touch with park staff.I saw where a Bike fest has been planned for Cedar Glades? is this event still on?? |
