Syllamo Update |
Lead | |
|
Rode Bad Branch Loop this past weekend. It was a little better around some of the uprooted trees. If you decide to ride, wear long sleeves and long pants. It
is a Jungle out there! No kidding! There are many briars, blackberry branchs and other sharp limbs that you just can't avoid. Some parts of the trail were
completely overtaken by vegatation. It has been very wet this summer, which accounts for the over growth. The trail conditions should improve after the first
frost or the next control burn. They are done with working on the trails because the trail fees are back.

RE: Syllamo Update | ||

You are right about one thing...it's pretty terrible out there. I worked with a crew of three all day on Tuesday and things are by far the worst that I've ever seen them. The ice storm has allowed so much more light to hit the forest floor this year and weeds are head high in places that never had brush at all before. About half of the brush on the east side of the road have been knocked down, but there's still a lot of work to do before good riding weather gets here. Fortunately we're not done working on the trails and the fees are not back on. I have a crew of tree guys starting to work on overhead stuff next week and Progressive Trail Design will start work on the Bad Branch tread work in September. If anybody wants to volunteer to hack brush let me know, there's plenty to go around. |

Syllamo Trail Report - Wednesday | ||

I volunteered Wednesday. Only got a few miles done. Starting from parking lot, clockwise, to the first crossing of Green Mtn road. I saw a USFS crew working on
another section of the trail too.

What is Progessive Trail Design? Could you get some inmates at Calico Rock to help "hack some brush" or is there too much liabiity? When do you think
the trail conditions at Bad Branch will become more ideal? How are the other trails?

I think having inmates come help is a great idea. It's easier to schedule them if you can feed them and I can't use federal dollars to do that.
Progressive Trail Design is a company contracted to fix the tread damage (the big holes in the trail). |

Chris, If you think you can schedule the prison, get me an idea of $$. Not just one day - but as long as you need them. I know the Twin Lake Bicycle Club will
put up some $$. I believe I can find some more money and support in this part of the state. Kelley

I'll talk with the Stone County Judge and get that information for you. They were able to use them for a lot of storm cleanup along roads.

Rode Red (Bad Branch?), Yellow, and Green today. The USFS crew has been hard at it. Looked like they were working on the remainder of red trail today. Most of
trail was in very rideable shape. Yellow was good. Green was perfect in that I don't recall a dismount due to trail, and the brush/weeds were trimmed very
far back from the trail. First time I have not drawn blood due to brush this Summer. Thanks Chris and crew - very nice ride for the 6 of us today.

Another update | ||

Figured I'd keep this thread going...
I rode Bad Branch on Thursday & it was great. Made it 2 miles in to Bald Scrappy on Friday and a stick took out my DR hanger. So, Friday afternoon/Saturday morning, I hiked White River Bluff and Bald Scrappy and did some light trail work- mainly just tossing fallen branches off of the trail. I broke out the hand saw in a couple of spots where small trees had fallen over the trail (about waist high) and cut those off as well. I also laid some branches out to mark the left turn where the orange/blue trail goes downhill off of the forest road into the woods just before it splits (this is if you're going CCW on the orange or CW on the Blue). Looking forward to heading back out in a couple of weeks! |
