29 Tires |

I'm looking for a good race rear tire to run that is fast and responsive, but also has good sidewall protection. I seem to have a bad habit of cutting
sidewalls. Been thinking about the Maxxis Crossmarks, any running these? If so what is your opinion of the tire?

crossmarks | ||
|
I ran crossmarks in the OC and ended up cutting a sidewall and then flatting three more time after that. I also had and instance where my front tire blew off
the rim while makeing a switch back a few days later. I promptly replaced them with Specialized Fast Tacks and havent had any trouble since. I think the
Crossmark is a good tire but maybe not for a rider my size (218 lbs).

I had a friend that ran those tires and had bad luck. He has also tried running other Maxxis tires on 29ers, 26", and 700c and has had bad luck with the
sidewalls on all of these tires. I am currently running a Specialized Captain on the the front and have had really good luck. And I am currently running a WTB
on the back and it has a small slash in the sidewall. In the past I have run Fast Tracks on my 26" and have a good luck with the sidewalls just not the
best tire for muddy conditions.

i hated all of my specialized tires that i have tried. but, love the kenda karma's. i run them on about everything these days. ive also tried the maxxis
tires and they didnt work out too well. the maxxis detonator road bike tires work great though.

Hutchinson Pythons | ||

Well I've heard enough about the Crossmarks to scare me a little bit. Who all has experience with the Hutchinson Python UST 29er tires, and how do you
like them? Any sidewall issues?

nanos | ||
|
I know I will get a lot of grief about this recommendation but I run getto Stan tubless kit with WTB Nano. Last year I had over 600 miles same tires and not
one issue I race the OC in 07, Eureka Spring and Mena, Burns Park and all the other venues and I never had a flat. Before I when tubeless I cut several sets of
Nanos, but once I went tubelrss that problem left. My race weight is 185 to 195 lbs and I hit everything on the trail. The reason I went with the nanos is
Chambers the pro that won the OC two years ago said that he hasn't had a flat in four years running Stans and Nano, I thought that claim was a little bold
but I am convience that it very well maybe possible. I have a bunch of pythons and two sets of Nano with cut sidewalls that I have cut when running with tubes.
Matt K. and Steven now are running nanos but heck they don't weigh enough to cut a tire, try them and see what you think. Keith

A Stan's Kit isnt ghetto it is a fine example of adaptive engineering. |

hey claton, i also just went tubeless with nano. wow!!! really responsive and you can run a lower pressure. plus, it droped about 1.5-2 pounds of wieght off of that sexy superfly (you know what i mean!!! i have never cut a side wall so maybe its not the tires but the rider rode the hutch. pyth. two years ago and loved those too. they seem to throw alot of mud though. only flatted once with them and that was on miners rock at
eureka springs two years ago. every one that has riden that will agree that it wouldnt have mattered what you got on the rim there were allllllloooooooot of
flats that year.

Nanos? seriously? | ||
|
Keith - I too ride at 195 + gear. Nanoraptor has been my favorite rear tire except that it seems I always have a tube ballooning out the sidewall from cuts. I
went ghetto on two 29er bikes about 4 months ago. All 4 tires have failed - 3 because of sidewall cuts. 1 of them was Rampage and the other an IRC (that one I
expected). The third was a Geax Segauro. I would be very pleased to be able to ride a Nanoraptor AND it be tubeless. Before I go out and buy the tire and deal
with the mess of setting it up, please do tell me if you think the Nano is somehow less likely to cut the sidewall when tubeless, or do you think the
Stan's goop somehow seals a cut sidewall on a Nano, or do you think you have maybe just been really lucky? Kelley

Hammer me please | ||

I new I was going to get blasted but seriouly If you have ever riden behind me your first thought would be how does this guy manage to hit everything in the
trail, my response is that I am extremely talented. As for luck my wife will attest to my mojo I HAVE NONE for example 6 years a go I am racing in Eureka
Spring when it was a two day stage race just my luck I was in second place but woodfield couldn't follow simple instructions so he decided to do a lap
around the lake, we were real beginners. That mistake left me with a 3:00 minute cushion , I flated on the road 100 meteres into the race, change the tube
caught back up and then cut my python on the last lap so I ran the last mile with my bike so much for my 3:00 minute cushion. Thats the kind of luck I have
and yes the MTB Gods spoke and I think woodfield won the race. Hey if its luck I will take it I am planning on racing the whole series this year on the same
tires, we will see. Keith

im keiths little brother and i will testify!!!! he hits everything on the trail and even some things that arent on the trail. there is no "clean
line" with him its all about 'damn the torpedos- ramming speed!!!' so, if they last him then they will probably last you. and as for his
185-195!?! thats in questionable territory, i heard him talking the other day about raceing clids. and ruling the roost

Velocity Blunts | ||

Has anyone set a pair of Velocity Blunts up with a Stans Tubless Kit? If so how did it work and what tire combo did you use? Thanks....Jeremy.

Does anybody know of a tread pattern on a 29er similar to the velicoraptors below? I had these on my 26 Trek but I switched to a 29er in December. I
don't mind the Specialized tires I have now (Fast Trak Sport) but they don't seem to shed mud nearly as well as my velociraptors did.
Thanks. David http://www.mtbr.com/cat/tires-and-wheels/Tire/wtb/velociraptor-2-1/PRD_353425_151crx.aspx |

go with Pythons | ||
|
I have been running the Pythons since last season, (same set) they have like 4 or 5 cuts in the sidewall and still no problems. I know what your thinking, i
must not ride much and granted i haven't been lately but have managed to amass about 600 miles on them and they are still in really good shape. Clayton i
would recommend against the nanos, I'm sure you know of Kevin's recent tire woes. Pretty much all the WTB tires have a hard time setting up tubeless
ready and the nanos have a pretty weak sidewall. Besides the Pythons are the only "true" tubeless ready 29er tire out there right now. It has great
traction, low rolling resistance, and seals up nicely tubeless. For the OP, i would go with the Hutchinson's b/c they do have a strong sidewall for a 29er
tire and around here, you need that characteristic!
